Farmer to Border collie: Did you round up the sheep?

Border collie: Yes.

Farmer: So how many were there?

Border collie: Forty.

Farmer: That's funny, there were only thirty-eight this morning.

Border collie: You did tell me to round them up.

Canadian Championship 2011
 Blog Author - Jenny Glen
The Canadian Championship and Western Canadian Finals are being held this year in Cranbrook, BC at the beautiful Pine Butte Ranch. The scenery is breathtaking with mountains on all sides, not the least of which are the Rocky mountains on our right. We are running at a different angle this year than we did in 2005. It makes the terrain less dramatic, but that year the sheep were very cooperative. If you need dramatic this year, you need not look any farther than the sheep. They are fine wools from a local Hutterite colony that are used to being worked by dogs in large groups. If you rushed them, one would usually leave or run over the fence behind the post and off through the spectators and then the parking lot. If you were too kind, you might keep them together and on line, but they took it as a sign of weakness and got heavy. There were the rare dogs (namely Jean and Dennis Gelling's dogs, Star and Jan) who kept the sheep calm and moving.

Words of wisdom....
A good friend just reiterated a nice sentiment recently and I  will pass it along. Look around you at a trial or a training class, show or other competition and be supportive to someone. Inspire someone to do well, to feel great about what they've accomplished and how far they've gotten (even if they are new and even if they've been at it for a long time!) And remind them that their dogs didn't sign them up but they signed up the dogs. Thank your own dogs for sharing their time happily and willingly and make sure they are also having fun.

Congratulations to everyone out there who worked hard this year, who took their dog for a walk and not just to trianing classes, to everyone who learned something new or a better method to get what you want from your Canine partner.

Congratulations for being part of a wonderful world of Team sports where everyday we learn a little more about what we can learn and a little more about how little we know! Hahahaha.

Cheers,  from Tanya and all the gang at Tucker Creek!
